Black, H. Diterlizzi, T. (2003). The spiderwick chronicles: Book 1 The field guide. Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division. Mallory, Jared, and Simon Grace move into their great aunt Lucinda's house with their mother. The house is old and Jared was positive he heard something in the wall. At first he thought it was a squirrel, but they soon found out it was something else. Weird things started happening overnight and Jared is being blamed for them. Jared insists it wasn't him, but no one believes him until he shows his twin brother and sister the secret room. In the end the three siblings realize it was just the beginning. The book Jared found contained so much information on the manikin people. Information that according to the little man was not for humans. The strength I found in this book was that Jared was out to prove he didn't commit any of the things that were happening. He wanted to prove that he didn't tie his sisters hair to the bed by pouring flour all over the floor to capture the little footprints but instead he got himself into more trouble for the mess the little man made. Other books similar to this one are The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and The Indian in the Cupboard. What I learned was that as a parent we shouldn't automatically jump to conclusions. We need to give our children the benefit of the doubt. Jared's mother didn't believe him because lately he had been getting himself into trouble. I wonder if she would would of caught Simon in the kitchen that night she would of blamed him for the mess. Would she have believed Simon if he said he didn't do it.
