Satrapi, M. (2014). Persepolis. NY: Pantheon. Marjane is a little girl growing up in Iran at a time when the Islamic Revolution started taking place. The time when all females were forced to start wearing a veil. Marjane and her friends didn't understand why they had to wear the veil. Marjane lived with her parents and grandmother whom were against the revolution. Her parents attended demonstrations against the the revolution. Her grandmother and her also attended a demonstration, but her mother was very upset and slapped them both. This is when her parents realized the danger their daughter was in. Marjane spoke her mind to the point that she was kicked out of school. She wasn't afraid to show how she felt about everything that was going on. Because of this her parents had to make the difficult decision of making her leave Iran to go live in Vienna with a friend of her mothers. I found that her parents were very strong in sending their only daughter out of the country. They knew it was the best thing to do for their daughter even though it tore them inside. Students should also read Persepolis II. Another similar book that I would recommend my students to read is The Property by Rutu Modan and Jessica Cohen. It too is about the difficulties of growing up during a war. After reading this book I realized how lucky we are to live in a country with the freedom to live our lives that way we want to. A life where nobody tells you how to dress or live.
