Quintero, I. (2014). Gabi: A girl in pieces. TX: Cinco Puntos. Gabriela, Gabi, is a Mexican American teenage girl with a dysfunctional family. Gabi is not only dealing with teenage problems but also with the fact that her dad is a drug addict who disappears for days at a time. Her two best friends, Cindy and Sebastian, are dealing with problems of their own. Cindy ends up pregnant from German raping her, but she doesn't tell anyone except Gabi because she is knows she will get blamed for it. She knows they are going to say "boys will be boys." Sebastian tells his family he is gay, and his parents kick him out. In the end Gabi gets into a fight with German for defending Cindy. She ends up getting expelled from school and is deprived from walking on graduation day, but she is still able to pursue her dream of going to college and is accepted into Berkley. A strength I found in the book is that Gabi's problems pushed her to excel in school to get into college and make something of herself. I would recommend Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass written by Meg Medina to students who read Gabi because they are both novels of Mexican American teenage girls who are dealing with problems. Something I learned after reading this novel is that rape victims still blame themselves for  getting raped. Cindy didn't tell anyone not even her mother because she knew that she would still get blamed for what happened. If she wouldn't of been drunk or gotten in that car it wouldn't of happened. It's so upsetting that people do react like that. The victims are still blamed for putting themselves in that situation. Wearing too short of a dress, making out then wanting to stop, being too drunk or any other reason society finds to blame the victim instead of the guy who should of just stopped when he heard the word NO.
