Tamaki, M. (2014). This one summer. First Second. Ever since Rose can remember her parents and her have been going to Awago Beach for their summer vacations. Rose has a best friend named Windy that lives very close their cabin. This summer is different though, her mother is not acting herself. Rose's parents keep constantly arguing. Her mother is walking around like a zombie and refuses to go into the ocean. Last summer Rose's mother had a miscarriage while swimming and she is still taking it hard.  She is finding it hard to move on. Rose spends most of her time with Windy swimming and watching movies that they rent from the little store in town. That is where they meet Dud who works there. They also find out that Dud gets his girlfriend pregnant, but he doesn't want any part of it. In the end Jenny, Dud's girlfriend tries drowning herself in the ocean on a dark night. Rose's mother runs into the water to rescue her. A strength I found was that when Rose's mother ran to rescue Jenny it ended up helping herself as well. She hadn't been in the water since she had a miscarriage in that same ocean. Other books by Tamaki are Skim and True Lies. What I learned from reading this book was that sometimes facing our fears will help us get through whatever problem we think we can't handle. Rose's mother was able to face her fears by jumping in the water and helping someone else. Not only did she rescue Jenny but also herself.
