Brown, D. (2013). The great American dust bowl. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. In this graphic novel the author writes about the horrible event that happened in the 1930's. The author started by writing about the how the tectonic plates slid under each other and formed the Rockies. Continued to write about the American Indians, bison, and how they were pushed into reservations by the pioneers.By this time the ranchers brought in cattle that ended up dying due to the extreme heat. Ranchers started farming the land until the war ended causing the wheat value to crash. In 1931 rains stopped causing a drought that tortured the land, but that wasn't the end of it. Soon the land was so dry that winds started picking up causing huge dust storms. The storms picked up so much dirt that it was getting inside homes and making people sick. It went on like this until the drought ended ten years after it first started. The strength of this book is that we learn form our mistakes. We should never become greedy. The farmers took advantage of the profit the wheat was making during the war and planted twice as much only to be stuck with after the war ended. Prices went down drastically. Other books like this one are Years of Dust: The Story of the Dust Bowl and Children of the Dust Bowl. All three of them speak of the years during the Dust Bowl. I learned the hardships people went through due to these dust storms that occurred in the 1930's.
